Chapter 1: Nightmare in the Floating City of Saraband

Inn
Man:
The Bulzome Sect behaves quite well. They don't get drunk or cause trouble. Our job is a lot easier. But... when we speak to them, they don't care much for talking. I guess a tame life means no problems.
Girl:
Welcome! You want rooms for the night? I'm very sorry... Right now, we have no vacancies.
Monk near girl:
This lodge does have a bar, and you are free to use that... Only the second floor is off limits.
Woman with baby:
Busy... busy... busy... Having so many patrons keeps me busy. Wow, it is that time already?! I don't have much time until dinner. Please don't talk to me anymore... Can't you see I'm busy making dinner!? I said don't talk to me!
Monk near woman:
One of our priests wants to see you... if you are interested, I suggest you go to the middle room on the second floor.
Monk near monk who was near woman:
The Sect of Bulzome has rented the entire lodge. We're asking the others to leave! If you don't leave, you might get hurt.
Left monk:
You are... a Republican soldier. Your HQ is in the northwest. You should go there if you know what's good for you.
Right monk:
During times like these, can a Republic soldier really afford to waste his time in a place like this?
Begin choice options
No
Right monk:
You seem to be behind on current events, so let me fill you in. The Peace Conference failed. The Empire declared war when the Republic abducted the Emperor.
Yes
Right monk:
Wrong! Now that the war has begun, you cannot afford to waste any time. Got that? Now run along!
2F
Monk:
You ARE a soldier from the Synbios battalion... Correct?
Begin choice options
No
Monk:
What? Then leave here now! The four high priests of Bulzome are here. We can't just let anybody go in!
Yes
Monk:
Then enter the middle room. Be honored our high priests wish to meet you, and do not be rude! All the other rooms are off-limits! You must only enter the middle room, ...do not go anywhere else, got that!? I warn you about one thing. Only enter the middle room, ... you must not go to any other place.
End choice options
Monk 2:
What's wrong Lord Synbios? You heard a sound? I didn't hear anything myself. Since you seem to have the time to waste and come here, you should visit the high priests. Otherwise... upsetting them can be unhealthy...
Monk 3:
Do you have reasons to go past this point? ... this only leads to a dead end. Quit stalling and go to the middle room.
Bookshelf:
Long live the god Bulzome! With the power of light weakened, the power of darkness will rule the land.
Right Room
Voice:
Ugh... Ugh... Ugh....
Central Room
Fiale:
We are glad to see you are here. My name is Fiale... As a representative of the Bulzome Sect, I welcome you.
Dantares:
Welcome us...? Strange...? We got the sense that our presence was irritating you.
Dessheren:
Your reputation has spread throughout the Republic... You truly are a brave man, Sir Dantares. How long can you continue this charade?
Basanda:
Well, well... such a provocative statement. You are a High Priest, Dessheren... You must exerciese more restraint. Pelase pardon us, visitors from Aspinia. Let me introduce myself... I am Basanda, one of the Four of Bulzome.
Goriate:
I too am one of the Four. My name is Goriate of the wind. It is my pleasure to meet you... I hope you weren't mistreated by the other Bulzome monks... King Benetram?
Benetram:
Thank you for your kindness, High Priest Goriate. The Bulzome Sect has been very considerate.
Fiale:
We heard that the peace conference ended in chaos due to the kidnapping. I don't know what to think or say...
Dantares:
We've had no luck finding Emperor Domaric. We must find him. and waste no time in doing so.
Fiale:
What are your reasons in deciding to come to the lodge of Bulzome?
Benetram:
We entrusted something to you. We would like to have it back now... that's why we're here, High Priest Fiale.
Dessheren:
Entrusted... to us...?
Basanda:
HA HA HA.. your reason is intriguing. What do we of Bulzome have that belongs to King Benetram?
Dantares:
Don't pretend you don't know! The truth is, the conference's failure was plotted by the Bulzome Sect!
Fiale:
A plot... us...? That is a bold statement, but we have no idea what you're talking about.
Synbios:
.......
Goriate:
We have no memory of anything lent to us by the Republic. Sorry, but you must forego your quest...
Dessheren:
What do you think you are doing, Dantares?!
Dantares:
Oh, nothing... he looked a bit uncomfortable, so I thought I'd help him by taking off his mask for him...
Basanda:
That's none of your business.
Benetram:
Hmm... Outside of you four, it would seem that all the other monks wear masks like that... Is there any meaning behind it?
Fiale:
There isn't a "deep meaning" in wearing the mask, King Benetram. Once one becomes a High Priest, many things are allowed, but until them we seek to serve by suppressing our individuality. And thus, the mask is a symbol of this.
Dantares:
So as long as they wear the mask, the high priests determine even the fate of their lives... like gods?
Goriate:
Fiale, we've spoken for too long. Now would be a good time to ask them to leave.
Dantares:
It is my mistake, King Benetram. If I knew it'd be like this, I would have brought the rest of our people...
Synbios:
.......
Domaric:
.......
Benetram:
Stop it, Synbios, Dantares! Just take a look around you. It would not be wise to start a fight... Every Bulzome monk will attack us simultaneously if we provoke them... It'd be better for us to leave now...
Monks (random):
Knowing how powerful the four Bulzome High Priests are, retreat and go home. You have no chance if you fight them.

Some call Bulzome a god of darkness. Such powers are often called that. You must have similar power to oppose us.

Do you know what would've happened if it was their wish that we slay you? You're lucky to get out of here alive.
Outside
Dantares:
Just as we thought, the Bulzome priests are the ones who abducted and are keeping the Emperor. Let's hurry back to our camp. We'll come back with everyone else!
Masqurin:
By "everyone", do you mean us?
Grace:
Masqurin wouldn't stop making a fuss, so we came out here.
Dantares:
All right... now it's time to fight... We will rescue Emperor Domaric!
Benetram:
Synbios, you will be the leader. Everyone, follow Synbios' lead!
Inn
Man:
Do you want to order a meal or milk? Or how about root beer... I see... let me know when you decide. Now that you mention it, some monks did stay here during the peace conference. They left a while ago, though.
Girl:
Welcome. Do you need a place to stay? All the rooms are unoccupied... You can choose any room you like. Customers from the Bulzome Sect...? Well, I'm sorry, but I don't seem to recall anyone like that staying here.
Woman with baby:
Why in the world did I prepare so much food? We won't be able to eat it all. Bulzome... masked monks... Yes, they stayed here, but you'd hardly notice their presence... very unassuming...
Onto 2F
Dantares:
What is going on... There were so many Bulzome monks here. How could they all vanish so quickly?
Benetram:
Synbios, let's go up to the second floor and inspect the rooms of those High Priests.
2F
Dantares:
Just as we thought... ... no one is here... I wonder where they all went?
Benetram:
The Bulzome Sect... tricked us.
Synbios:
.......
Benetram:
They... took advantage of our situation, and decided to set us up.
Dantares:
Situation... took advantage?? Set us up.... I'm afraid I don't understand?
Benetram:
They knew... the Empire is after us, and that we wouldn't risk our lives to fight them to save Emperor Domaric.
Dantares:
Of course... if we challenged them, we'd barely survive their onslaught, with no chance of saving the Emperor.
Benetram:
Instead, we retreated, giving them the time to escape... We did... exactly what they wanted us to do.
Dantares:
But... what was their objective?
Benetram:
In order to move the Emperor, the Empire's attention had to be diverted. We would have been their decoy.
Dessheren:
Incredible! You are brilliant, King Benetram! You saw right through everything!
Basanda:
HA HA HA... no use searching for us. Our main forces are already on the move. We have no reason to stay here!
Goriate:
You would chase after us...? Give it up. Soon, the Imperial army will arrive. All of you... are trapped like rats!
Benetram:
Tell me... just one thing! Who was impersonating me... and for what purpose...?
Fiale:
It was I, Fiale. It was part of our plot to ruin the peace conference between the Republic and the Empire!
Dessheren:
With the conference's failure and the kidnapping, we now have a decoy to assist as we leave Balsamo. Two birds with one stone. It's going as we had planned.
Basanda:
As we take the Emperor overseas, put up a good fight, my little decoys! If you live, I'm sure we'll meet again.
Dantares:
What are we to do, King Benetram? If the priests' words are true, our lives are in grave danger...
Benetram:
There's no reason for them to like now, but we are not out of options. There has to be more that we can do. We can't make a strategy until we know what's going on outside the castle. Let's get to higher ground. Don't worry Synbios and Dantares. Balsamo is enclosed by a high wall. There must be a secret path somewhere.
Found Barnard
There is a person who is tied up in ropes. Will you untie the ropes?
Begin choice options
No
Yes
Barnard:
I remember you... you are Synbios of the Republic. Why did you decide to rescue me now? You were the ones who captured me because I knew of the conspiracy between Bulzome and Benetram... weren't you? Does Benetram's plan scare you? Is that why you've decided to let me go? From what I saw, you used the peace conference as your chance to take the Emperor. I can't condone such an act! I would thank you for helping me, but next time we meet, we will be enemies. The Republican army will be destroyed!

Balsamo Village
Left soldier:
You must be... the remnants of the Republican army... Ha, your fate awaits you. The general will extend you a most warm welcome...
Right soldier:
You don't think you will pass through here... do you, Republican scum? I won't allow it! Your deaths are to serve as our early celebration of the Empire's inevitable conquest of the Republic.
Old man:
The soldiers blocking the entrance are under General Crewart's command. He's a heartless and heinous man.
Young man:
Imperial soldiers just arrived at the gates, and no one is allowed to enter or leave town. They won't say why. I bet a huge army will come to capture Republican VIPs like you guys. That's why I told you to leave town.
Girl:
I know nothing about the Bulzome Sect. People say it is a dubious religion. I wouldn't put my faith in it!
Man:
I hear the Imperial army closed off the town. Probably came to catch you. You'll most likely be tortured.
Woman:
I hear Prince Arrawnt issued an order to destroy the Republican army before they destroy the town of Railhead.
Old woman:
Once the Imperial army heads here or northward, the bandits of Dusty Village will make their move. Shiraf will be glad.
Gal:
What happened to the Bulzome Sect? There were so many of them, but now, they're nowhere to be seen.
Imperial Base
Centaur (Walz):
Um... Um... my fever won't go down. My wound must be getting worse... Doctor... please get me a doctor...
Dwarf (Rock):
Republican soldiers roaming freely... What is the Imperial army doing? If they don't hurry, they'll get away.
Soldier:
I... I don't want to die... I never wanted to be a hero anyway...
Church
Priest:
That cult really did worship evil. Once they disappeared, everyone regained their senses.
Kid:
I once thought the masks were cool. You know... Thieves wear masks too. Wonder why I thought they were cool?
Girl:
I'm glad I was never tricked into following the Bulzome religion. I thank Elbesem for protecting me.
Old woman:
I have sinned! I briefly lost my faith in Elbesem. Oh Elbesem, please forgive me!
Mayor's House
Man:
Toby ran out despite me asking him to wait. He hasn't returned yet. Yes, a Republican soldier named Obright, suddenly ran into the house, went up to the roof, and is up there just staring outside.
Old man:
Toby went off somewhere, I don't know where. Then, just a few moments ago, a Republican soldier came in. He went up to the roof.
Roof
Obright:
The Varlant army is struggling. I don't think we can count on them... There... another one just got killed. The Spiriel army is as powerful as they're said to be, King Benetram.
Dantares:
So... we've finally found you. You are Obright from the Produn army! Why are you here?
Obright:
As my senses cleared, Toby told me of the town's closure and your plight. I rushed here hoping to spot you.
Synbios:
.......
Obright:
I knew once you heard of the closure, you'd try to assess the situation. No better place to do that than here.
Benetram:
So you've decided to help us take the escape route leading to Dwarf's Hill? I commend your decision, Obright.
Obright:
I wasn't aware of a secret pathway to Dwarf's Hill. You're called the wisest general for a reason, King Benetram.
Dantares:
King Benetram saw right through it... Hmm... I'm amazed...
Obright:
I've been separated from the Produn army, but I'm still loyal to the Republic. Please... allow me to join your forces.
Obright the Warrior joined the force
Obright:
Let's go to Duncan's house now. Toby should be there already.
Headquarters
Benetram:
I wanted so badly to avert the war, my judgment became impaired, and we fell into a trap. I'll admit I was wrong.
Dantares:
The Bulzome cult tricked us... What an evil pack they are... Cowards as well. The two things I hate most in people...
Masqurin:
The four high priests of Bulzome... They seem more like sorcerers... They're much stronger than I am...
Grace:
It seemed the power of the four high priests was... somehow being limited by something. I do not want to think about their full powers...
Hayward:
We raided the lodge thinking we'd fight the Bulzome cult... They weren't there! How cowardly!
Obright:
Balsamo is surrounded by the Imperial army, but thanks to Toby and Duncan, we'll be able to escape from here safely.
Duncan's House
Toby:
What took you so long, Obright? Also... what is... who are... are these people from the Republic..?
Obright:
I did a whole lot of thinking, Toby... I can't go there all alone. That's why I spoke to these people.
Toby:
What do we do, Duncan... we don't want anyone to know about the path... You want that... isn't that bad..?
Duncan:
Listen carefully... Toby... They're being hunted by the Empire. If they don't escape, they're dead. The secret tunnel I have been digging for years, opens at the well ahead. No one in Balsamo... knows about it. I, however, owe a lot to Obright, and you don't look like bad people. You know, I'm glad the pathway I built for fun is being used to save lives, especially if it saves the King's life.
Benetram:
Duncan... thank you for your help. I'll find out whose behind this war... and I promise to return your favor.
Duncan:
Please proceed carefully. I hope you remain safe... Elbesem's speed to you.
Toby:
I was afraid that Obright would be considered a fugitive soldier. You will be okay... take care.
