CHAPTER 2 - SPIRIT OF THE HOLY SPRING
And so Max and his part followed the army of Runefaust to Rindo, a land of merchants.
Tales of the Force's exploits had already reached the ears of the people of this country.
But not one of them knew the true meaning of the Shining Force's struggle.
RINDO
Merchant:
This is Rindo. It's full of so many great things. The land of my dreams!
Weapons Seller:
Welcome to Rindo! Without good weapons you won't win a fight!
Boken:
Greetings! I've just decided to become an adventurer!
Can't stay here all my life! I'm getting ready to go off on my first adventure!
Man:
I'd love a big shop. Maybe one with a ceiling...
...or is that frivolous?
Girl:
You're from Guardiana aren't you?
You're going to meet Princess Anri in Manarina, right?
Man at the counter:
Step right up, one and all!
Today's main attraction is...
A battle between Runefaust...
and the miserable remnants of the army of Guardiana!
You won't see this anywhere else, folks!
How about it, sir?
IF NO
Man at the counter:
Too bad... It's a great production.
IF YES
Man at the counter:
OK, it'll will (sp. error) start soon. Why don't you take a seat over there?
Man at the counter:
And now, ladies and gentlemen!
The show is about to begin!
Actor 1:
Ha! I found you, dog of Guardiana! I'll teach you to stand in Runefaust's way!
Actor 2:
Eeek! Please, I beg you! Spare my life!
Actor 1:
Too late for that! Prepare to meet your maker!
Actor 2:
Eeeeyaaaargh!
(Actor 1 strikes actor 2)
Actor 2:
You killed me!
Narrator (man at the counter):
Wasn't that brilliant, folks?
What a thrilling performance! The brave hero of Runefaust slaying the Guardiana scum!
Hope you enjoyed today's show! Be sure to come again soon!
Woman:
The shows here are always really good.
Today's is excellent!
It's called "The Glory of Runefaust"!
Kid:
Go Runefaust!
Old man:
Shows are great! They're just so exciting! Yeah! Yeah!
Oh no! My dentures have come out!
Actor 1 (playing Runefaust Knight):
Ha ha ha! What a great role! I love being an actor!
Actor 2 (playing Max):
Argh, I hope I can stop playing this role soon...
Old Woman:
The circus is coming to town soon, you know. I love the circus, I do.
Boy:
When I grow up, I'm gonna open a shop in Guardiana.
I heard it's a nice peaceful country. My dad always said that, before he died.
Old Man #2:
You came from Guardiana, am I right? And you're seeking something?
Hmm, the Legacy of the Gods...
In that case, why don't you try asking a mage in Manarina?
Item seller:
Welcome to Rindo! I've got lots of useful items here! Take a look!
Harbour Man:
This harbour's usually full of boats... But the soldiers bought the lot.
They hurried back to Runefaust in anything they could get their hands on.
Man with a dream:
When the circus comes, they'll put a tent up over yonder.
And then I'll get loads of customers for my shop...
Hee hee hee...
Old Woman #2:
If you ever go to Manarina, you should try and find the great Otrant.
He knows everything! He's a really important mage, you see.
Dr Crock:
Welcome to the home of Crock the inventor! That's me, by the way.
You look like you've got time on your hands. Why not take a look at my new Steam Suit?
Hey, Guntz!
Walk for the people!
Guntz:
Is it really going to work this time?
Will I be able to move?
Dr Crock:
Fool! How dare you question the genius of the great Crock! Now GET WALKING!
Guntz:
...All right, all right.
Guntz:
I...I can't move. It's no good...
Dr Crock:
Darn it! Not again..
(talking to him again)
Dr Crock:
To be honest, I haven't quite finished this steam suit off yet.
I ran out of funds for my research, and the Mayor refused to lend me any more.
He's just so rude!
Guntz:
Phew! It's heavy! It's soooo heavy!
Housekeeper:
Honestly! My boss...always getting caught up in things that never make money!
I have to look after him, you know. He can't even make his own meals!
Mayor's Son:
If you're looking for the Mayor of Rindo, this is the place.
...He's my father.
...Lord Kane...we've failed you.
(talking to him again)
Mayor's Son:
The people of Rindo do not get involved in pointless wars.
If you want help, you'll have to ask another country.
Mother:
A circus is coming here soon.
The kids are so excited, I just can't handle them!
Mayor:
Welcome to Rindo, land of merchants. You may call me the Mayor.
I hear you've come all the way from Guardiana. Now, what can I do for you?
Max:
Mr. Mayor, Guardiana has...
Mayor:
What! Is this really true? Hmm...
I had heard rumours, but I never thought...
Come to think of it, I heard that Manarina also increased its defence forces recently...
But as long as our wealth is safe, the misfortunes of other lands do not concern us.
Why not seek help in Manarina? I will see that the way is opened to you.
(talking to him again)
Mayor:
Actually...
Kane of Runefaust...
He bought up all the boats here and rushed back home.
Did you want something?
As I believe I already told you, even if Runefaust has destroyed Guardiana...
it has nothing ot do with us here. The barrier is open. Please leave for Manarina.
Mayor's Grandson:
My granddad's a really important man.
And he's really nice to me too! I love my granddad!
Theatre-Loving Man:
I heard there's a really good show on at the moment.
I think I Might go and take a look when I've shut up shop.
BATTLE #6
Tao:
Once we cross that desert...we'll be in Manarina, where Princess Anri is...
Lowe:
Yeah, Princess Anri's in Manarina...Heh heh heh. Princesses are always cute.
Khris:
I've heard tales about Princess Anri, too. That she's very beautiful...
Lowe:
Heh heh heh. You said it...
Max:
Lowe!
Get a grip on yourself!
Nova:
Max, there are enemies ahead!
Those are the monsters used by the mages of Manarina to defend their country!
Movement is difficult here. Try not to become isolated as you move forward!
Giant Bats are swift movers! Don't underestimate them!
END OF BATTLE #6
MANARINA
Mage:
Welcome to Manarina, the land of magic and mystery!
Mage #2:
We too are aware of Runefaust's movements... So we've improved security.
But we didn't mean to attack you like that... I'm really sorry...
Mage #3:
Er, sorry about before. The creature we keep as a pet, I set it on you, right?
I assumed that you were the Runefaust Army attacking. You're pretty strong!
Mage #4:
There are lots of famous mages in Manarina. You should visit them if you can.
Anri:
Who are you?
Max:
I'm Max. I came from Guardiana.
Anri:
From Guardiana, huh? And what are you doing here? Oh, I see.
A letter from Father, right? Always checking up on me! I'm not a child anymore!
Max:
N-no, that's not...
Anri:
What? What is it?
Max:
King Guardiana...
has passed away.
He was killed at the hands of the army of Runefaust.
Anri:
Wh...what did you say? That can't be...
That's not possible!
Who are you, anyway? I can tell that you're not from Guardiana!
Max:
I...I...uh...
Tao:
Princess Anri!
Anri:
Tao... What are you doing here?
Tao:
This is Max.
He was Lord Varios' pupil. Now he's our leader. We're fighting against Runefaust.
Anri:
Then...then it's true... Father.. I mean, the king is dead.
Tao:
Yes, it's true.
Anri:
No...
I...I...
(upstairs)
Max:
...Hey.
Anri:
...
Max:
I was washed ashore with no memory of who I was, and the people of Guardiana saved me. All I can remember is what's happened in the past year. So...
I don't have any sad memories. Everyone in Guardiana was so kind to me...
Anri:
...
Max:
...So maybe there's nothing I can say to comfort you.
But even so...
Anri:
...That's enough. I'm all right.
Max, I appreciate your concern.
But I'm a princess. We of royal blood have a sacred duty to perform.
I had already heard about Runefaust from Lord Otrant.
I will fight with you. It's what my father would have wanted.
Max:
Thank you, Princess Anri.
(Anri joins the Shining Force!)
(back downstairs)
Tao:
Your Highness, I Know this must be hard for you, but let us fight together.
I will protect you with my life, if necessary.
Anri:
Thank you, Tao. But you don't need to worry.
Let's help each other improve our skills and use our power to fight for good.
Tao:
Yes, Your Highness!
Anri:
Max, I've already paid my respects to Lord Ortant.
We'll be waiting at headquarters.
Mage #5:
That fool upstairs! Now the room's a total mess again!
And I've said so many times not to use Blaze indoors!
Mage #6:
Heh heh heh. Heh heh.
You've found your way to a most frightening place...
We're conducting an experiment. It's truly gruesome. Want to watch?
IF NO
Mage #6:
Idiot! Who told you you could refuse? Stand there and watch!
IF YES
Mage #6:
Excellent. Brace yourself!
Mage #6:
I'm researching summoning demons.
Now, I shall summon a creature more terrifying than anything ever seen!
Dark powers! Bring forth the most terrible creature the world has ever seen!
(woman appears)
Mage #6:
...
Mage's wife
Mage #6:
Eep! Don't get mad! I'll get a real job! I promise!
Mage #7:
Underneath this land lies a fearsome underworld.
It's called the Cavern of Darkness, and is home to many beasts.
Mage #8:
Did you visit the Spring of Recollection too?
IF NO
Mage #8:
The Spring lies below us. There can be heard the voices of the Ancients...
IF YES
Mage #8:
Goodness! You have! And the Spirit's voice...?
NO, of course not...
Mage #9:
Hmmm...
Mage #10:
Hmmm...
Mage #11:
Um, let me see... "How to raise the magical creature Domingo...
When you've got hold of the egg, warm it up using a special machine..."
Mage #12:
Hmmm...
Um...Hmmm...
Mage #13:
Oh! I see, I see.
Mage #14:
Ha ha! That's useful!
Researcher:
Oh! This is a surprise! It's unusual to have visitors here.
I've been researching magical creatures for a long time.
Maybe it's made me a bit odd. No one ever comes here! To be honest, I'm lonely...
(if you talk to him again)
Researcher:
Oh yes! I have something special I've been wanting to give someone.
Try searching that machine.
(after Max searches the machine and obtains the Domingo Egg)
Researcher:
Do you like it? It's a Domingo Egg.
If you look after it well, it could be very useful to you.
Old Man:
where am I? Don't tell anyone I got lost. I'm too old to get lost.
Arthur:
My name is Arthur. I used to be a knight... But I wasn't cut out for it.
Now I'm just a burden on this kingdom. I do laundry in exchange for food.
Mage #15:
Far too many people come through here! I can't work! What? I'm the one in the way?
You fool! This was my room first! Then someone just came along and built the stairs!
(after pushing a mage down stairs)
Mage #16:
Drat! Not as good a view from down here. Better climb back up...
(mage attempts to climb back up, but is unable to)
Mage #16:
I won't give up! One day I'll make it to the top again!
Sentry:
There's an extremely important mage inside this room, I'll have you know!
Not letting anyone in here, no, no, no!
Old Gert:
Welcome to my laboratory!
I'm researching how to turn humans into other animals. But you see...
No one's willing to help me with my experiments. DO you think you could help me?
IF NO
Old Gert:
No curiosity, eh? When I see you next, I'll turn you into a frog!
IF YES
Old Gert:
That's a good boy! Now stand right over there.
(Max is turned into a chicken)
Old Gert:
Wow! I've done it! What a tasty-looking chicken!
Sentry:
There's a pretty birdie! Ooh, you want to go inside? Okay, go on then!
(talking to him again)
Sentry:
It really is a cute looking chicky. I don't [know] how people can eat them...
VIP Mage:
Ha ha ha. Old Gert turned you into a chicken? That's easily fixed.
(Max is changed back)
VIP Mage:
By the way, have you heard of Shade Abbey?
IF NO
For generations, the priest there has worked with people of royal blood.
He would know about the ancient gods and the evil Dark Dragon.
IF YES
VIP Mage:
You young people think you know everything!
Sentry:
...Ha ha ha. That chicken... So cute!
(underground, below Otrant's Room)
Guard:
The Cavern of Darkness is home to many beasts. No one ever comes out alive.
I won't speak ill of you if you decide to turn back.
(in Otrants room)
Maid:
The only decent person in this country is Otrant!
The rest of them...They're all just weird!
Otrant:
I am Otrant. I lead this land of mages.
You must be the one who leads the soldiers of Guardiana. And your name is?
Max:
Yes. My name is Max.
I'm a pupil of Lord Varios, leader of Guardiana's Brand of Knights.
Otrant:
I see. Varios's... Hang on! Max?
I've heard that name before...
Well, never mind.
More importantly...
I hear Runefaust are after the Legacy of the Gods...
Is this true?
Max:
Yes. That's why they attacked Guardiana.
Otrant:
Hmm...
Even I don't know what the Legacy of the Gods is...
But... I do have a clue. It's so valuable though, I can't just hand it over.
Are you prepared to prove your determination?
IF NO
Otrant:
Well then, there's no point in you being here. You may as well leave.
Otrant:
If you want to know, you must first prove your determination.
Unless you can do this, I can't give you the clue. So? Are you prepared?
IF YES
Otrant:
Excellent! Under this land lies a lost world known as the Cavern of Darkness.
You must go down there and bring back a treasure. It's called the Orb of Light.
That is the key you need to unlock the mystery of the Legacy of the Gods.
(if you talk to him again)
Otrant:
Underneath this land is a place known as the Spring of Recollection.
To go there, you will need the Orb of Light.
Understood? Then you must waste no time! You must hurry to get the Orb of Light!
Guard:
Ha ha ha! Think you can come out of the Cavern alive?!
BATTLE 7 - THE CAVERN OF DARKNESS
Max:
So this is the Cavern of Darkness.
Anri:
Yes. It's connected to the netherworld, and monsters are born here.
The mages of Manarina use it as a proving ground to test their power.
We'd best be careful.
Hans:
Unnngh... I thought I was ready for it, but that eerie feeling...
Khris:
Don't overdo it! If you get hurt, call for me right away!
Max:
Our mission is to find the "Orb of Light"!
We need it to solve the mystery of the Legacy of the Gods. Let's go, everybody!
Skeleton:
...Filthy humans, with your wasteful flesh and fat... ... why have you come here?
This is our treasure... and you can't have it!
END OF BATTLE 7
Nova:
The enemies have all been defeated! Now, quickly, the Orb of Light!
Guard:
I don't believe it! You got the Orb of Light?!
This must be reported to Otrant right away. Then the door will be opened.
Otrant:
At last, you got hold of the Orb of Light!
Now you must go to the great door.
Beyond that door is the Spring of Recollection. Hold the Orb of Light up in front of it.
Then I'm sure the truth you seek will become clear.
Maid (blocking the doorway):
It's no good! You must listen properly to the Spirit of the Spring!
Spirit of the Spring:
... You are...Max...
I'm so pleased to see you...
Max:
H...How.... How did you know my name?
Spirit of the Spring:
...You don't know who I am, do you?
How to explain...
Listen, Max, and listen closely, to what I am about to tell you.
Many ages ago...
The lords of Rune...
left something behind...
The Legacy of the Gods...
Objects of terrible power...
They were sealed away.
You must make sure that no-one breaks that seal.
That is your mission.
Max:
My...mission?
Tell me more! Where did I come from? Why have I been given this...
Spirit of the Spring:
It is still early... I can't tell you any more.
Both...both of you must be here before I can tell you the rest.
You...and he...
must come to Metapha. Metapha, the land of the gods.
Only then...only then will I reveal the full extent of your mission to both of you.
Guard:
You heard a voice coming from the Spring of Recollection?
You should talk to Otrant. Then the path you should take will be revealed.
Otrant:
Max, listen carefully.
Not just anyone can get the Orb of Light.
Only the chosen ones...
Those that have been chosen by the Spring.
The spring has chosen you and your comrades to serve the Powers of Light.
From now on you will be known as...
the Shining Force!
Otrant:
First you must go to the Eastern Continent.
There you will find a country called Prompt, where the ancestors of the gods live.
They are sure to know where the Legacy of the Gods sleeps. And they will know of Metapha.
Continue your journey without fear, Max.
The light will be with you.
Maid:
Oh, how lovely! Mr. Otrant gave you a name, did he?
"Shining Force"! That's really a wonderful name!
Mage #7:
Unbelievable! You made it back from the Cavern!
Mage #8:
What? You heard a voice at the Spring of Recollection? Hm, so the legend is true...
Researcher:
...I see. You're trying to figure out the Legacy of the Gods...?
Then I'm sure Prompt... is where you should go. Home to the children of the gods...
The problem is, Prompt is on the Eastern Continent... You have to go by boat.
But I should think you'll find one in Rindo. Good luck, Shining Force!
(if you talk to him again)
Researcher:
It's a long way. But don't give up... I know your dreams will come true.
I wish you luck! Go Shining Force!
Arthur:
Hey, I know you! You're the ones fighting against Runefaust, aren't you?
I'd...I'd like to try my hand at fighting, one last time. So I'm begging you!
If I get in your way, you can get rid of me, I won't mind! Just take me with you!
No - even if you turn me down, I'm still gonna follow you!
(Arthur joins the Shining Force)
Arthur:
I'll go wait at HQ. Just give me a yell when it's time to fight. Don't forget!
Here's a little something you might find useful...
(Max got Arthur's Card)
(Arthur leaves)
Max:
He's kind of pushy.
...Oh well.
(Through getting turned into a chicken again by Old Gert, and going back to the VIP mage)
VIP Mage:
Ha ha ha. Old Gert turned you into a chicken? That's easily fixed.
(Max is changed back)
VIP Mage:
............
I sense a terrible presence...
Shade Abbey.
Two strong forces met.
...One of the forces...
...disappeared.
Mage #2:
What?! Otrant gave your army a name?!
And what is it?
"Shining Force"... Hmm...that's not bad at all!
Make sure you live up to your name and put up a good fight!
(talking to him again)
Mage #2:
"Shining Force" ...
...Hmm, that's a good name!
Make sure you live up to your name and put up a good fight!
RINDO
Note:
(note, all conversations with people are the same except for those below)
Girl:
You found Princess Anri! That's great! The more in the Force, the merrier!
Man at the counter:
Come one, come all! Today's main attraction is...
A battle between Runefaust... and the magnificent Shining Force!
You won't see this anywhere else folks! How about it, sir?
IF NO
Man at the counter:
What?! You're not gonna watch this great show? Well, your loss...
IF YES
Man at the counter:
OK, it'll start soon. Why don't you sit in those seats over there?
Man at the counter:
And now, ladies and gentlemen! The show is about to begin!
Actor 1 (Rune Knight):
Yikes! It's the Shining Force! Aieeee! Don't hurt me! I promise not to do bad things anymore!
Actor 2 (Max):
Ha! A likely story! I know you're up to no good!
Actor 1:
Drat!
How did you know?
Actor 2:
Take this!
(Actor 2 strikes actor 1)
Actor 1:
You killed me!
Narrator (Man at the counter):
Wasn't that great, folks?
What a thrilling performance! The gallant Shining Force defeats dastardly Runefaust!
Hope you enjoyed today's show! Be sure to come again soon!
Woman:
The shows here are always really good.
Today's is excellent!
It's called "The Might of Light"!
Kid:
Go Shining Force!
Actor 1:
Aargh, I hate this role. What was I thinking of, becoming an actor...?!
Actor 2:
Oh, what a great role! I want to keep playing it forever!
Old Man #2:
Oh yes, people say the priest at Shade Abbey has Guardiana royal blood.
I should think he's probably quite clued up on old traditions and the like.
Old Woman:
Well, well, well...
What could be going on here?
There's a lovely tent all set up, but the circus isn't open. Is something wrong?
Harbour Man:
The boat's not for sale. It's been in the Mayor's family for years.
If you really want it, then you'll have to try talking to the Mayor.
Man with a dream:
Whoops! Can't go in there yet!
The circus people asked me to make sure no one goes in until they're ready.
Old Woman #2:
Seems that you've been off to Manarina.
Well, spill the beans. Are the rumours true? Are they all magnificent mages?
Dr Crock:
Guess what! That stingy Chairman lent me the money to finish my research!
Now my Steam Suit is complete! A great day for science! Time to test out my new invention!
Hey, Guntz! Try walking again.
Guntz:
But you haven't done anything to me since the last time!
Dr Crock:
Fool! How dare you question the genius of the great Crock! Now GET WALKING!
Guntz:
...All right, all right.
Guntz:
I...I can't move. It still doesn't work...
Dr Crock:
DARN it! Not again..
Mayor:
What did you say? You want me to lend you my family boat?
That boat belonged to my ancestors. I can't lend it just like that.
Although...
If you do me a favour, I suppose I may consider it...
IF NO
Mayor:
Then I won't lend you my boat! Now get out of here!
IF YES
Mayor:
Well, my grandson has disappeared.
No one's seen him leave town. But we can't find him. Please, will you look for him?
If you find my grandson for me, you can use the boat as much as you like.
I'm counting on you, Max. Please find my grandson.
Mother:
Oh, dear gods! Please bring my baby back to me safe and sound!
Mayor's Son:
I beg of you, please save our son. We're totally powerless...
Man with a dream:
Eh? The Mayor's grandson? Come to think of it, I saw him here a few days ago. You don't think the circus people...? All right, you can go in and look, but be careful.
(talking to him again)
Man with a dream:
Be careful, okay?
BATTLE 8 - THE CIRCUS TENT
Nova:
Ahem. Could I have a word with you, Max?
I'm glad to see that you've gathered so many companions.
I think now would be a good time for me to explain about "Formation".
Sadly, you cannot bring all of your companions into battle.
The surest path to victory is to choose those warriors most suited to the situation.
To do this, you will need to use the "Formation" command.
Know that your battle party can have up to 12 members, including yourself.
Let's look at the list using the "Formation" command.
Party members marked with a O will go into battle with you.
You can set or remove the O mark using the A button.
If you're happy with the ones you've selected, press the B Button to exit "Formation".
And that's it.
Shall I explain one more time?
IF YES
Nova:
(as above)
IF NO
Nova:
Very well, then. I trust you've grasped the concept by now.)
Mishaela:
Well, hello there, Max.
Do you remember me?
It's me! The fortune-teller from Alterone...
Max:
You...!
Mishaela:
Well, you may not remember me, but I remember you.
But tell me - what are a bunch of stragglers from Guardiana doing nosing around here?
I'd think that losers like you would have the sense to go back and hide in their holes.
Gort:
Why you -- ! You'd better watch your mouth!
Anri:
Mishaela... I've heard that name somewhere. Aren't you Runefaust's...?
Tao:
Princess Anri...this is the legendary witch, Mishaela! I hear she has awesome powers!
Mishaela:
...The very same. I am Mishaela...a witch in the service of Runefaust forces.
That fool, Kane...he wasn't up to the task, so I'm here to finish the job.
Marionettes! My puppets! My precious little children!
See that these warriors get the most excruciatingly painful death imaginable!
END OF BATTLE 8
Marionette:
...Grk... Grk...Grrrk...Mishaela...
Max:
You... You're the Mayor's grandson?
So you were captured by Mishaela, after all!
Mayor's grandson:
Waaah! The fortune-teller lady kidnapped me and brought me here~ She said she's take out my soul and put it in a doll!
It's a good thing you came along! Thanks a lot! Now I can go home and play!
Man with a dream:
To think those circus freaks took away that poor little kid...
I feel awful... I had no idea!
Harbour Man:
You saved the Mayor's grandson?
In that case, you should ask him about his boat. I'm sure he'd lend it to you.
Mayor:
Ah, thank you! You saved my grandson! ...I can't thank you enough.
So Runefaust ambitions do affect our country after all. We too will take action.
We don't have any weapons in our country, but we'll do what we can to help you.
Use the boat as much as you like, and go safely. May the Light be with you!
(talking to him again)
Mayor:
Go safely! May the Light be with you!
Mother:
I just can't thank you enough for saving my baby.
Mayor's Son:
Thank you. The boat is yours. Use it whenever you wish.
Mayor's Grandson:
Thanks a lot for saving me!
Harbour Man:
The Mayor's given his permission. You're free to use his boat.
(on boat)
Anri:
What a lucky break, eh, Max? With this ship, we'll be able to cross the sea and catch up with the army of Runefaust!
Max:
Yes, Princess. And the secret of the Legacy that they're after, too...
Anri:
What's wrong, Max?
Mae:
Your Highness! Come down! Come down! ...There's a strange presence!
Max:
M...Mishaela!
Mae:
Begone, witch!
Mishaela:
What's the matter? Never seen a witch before? ...Can't you shut up?
Max!
I never thought you'd be able to defeat my Marionettes...
My poor little darlings...
I'll multiply a hundred times the pain and suffering you caused them!
(flames engulf the ship)
Max:
Mae! It's too dangerous here! Take Princess Anri and run!
Mae:
Okay! Come on, Princess, this way!
Mishaela:
Don't make such a gruesome face, Max. We'll just have to wait until next time to settle the score. When you're exhausted at the end of your long arduous journey... I will return to claim your life!
Mishaela:
Until then...farewell!
(she disappears)
Mae:
Max! It's too dangerous! You have to come back!
Max:
But...
...the ship...!
Mae:
Max!
(the ship sinks)
Max:
...
Harbour Man:
Argh! The boat's burnt! This is terrible...
Mayor:
What? My beloved boat...burnt...?
It was the last boat here...
Getting to the Eastern Continent without a boat would be a very tough journey...
You should consider that carefully before you answer. Do you really have to go east?
IF NO
Mayor:
Really? Then why don't you live here?
If you open up a shop, you'll make enough to get by.
(if you talk to him again)
Mayor:
Sorry? Have you changed your mind?
IF YES
Mayor:
Really? Then I'll tell you this.
Avoid Bustoke in the north and cross over Pao Plains...
You'll come to Uranbatol. I'm sure you'll get a boat there. It won't be an easy journey...
If you need guidance, you should ask at Shade Abbey.
If you want to know more about the journey, ask my son. Good luck!
Mayor's Son:
If you're going north from here, you must go to Shade Abbey first.
In the Abbey you will find someone to guide you.
Then you should be able to safely negotiate the mountain road to Bustoke.
SHADE ABBEY
Amon:
I'm Amon.
Balbaroy... My husband... He needs your help.
Left like this, he'll die!
(if you talk to him again)
Amon:
I... I... can't move...
Old Woman:
A princess has been born in Guardiana, I hear. Her name is Anri...
Soldier:
Our Country Alterone is a very poor land...
I wonder if we'll ever be able to live in comfort?
Girl:
Ha ha. I don't think so! You can't go any further. It's a seeeecret!!!
Bell Ringer:
I'm sc-sc-scared! Argh, what's going on? I don't have a clue.
Pale Man:
Where...am I? Am I alive, or...
Ghoul:
He he he he he........
Priest:
Welcome to Shade Abbey. Did you want something?
If you want to offer a prayer to the gods, please go ahead. I'll see you again later.
Ha ha ha ha......
Girl (no longer blocking the doorway):
Ha ha ha. Ha ha ha...
Young Merchant:
I'm thinking of going to Rindo and setting up a shop.
It's got a harbour and everything. I think there's money to be made there.
Mud-Covered Man:
It's so cold! It's so much warmer being in the mud...
Balbaroy:
Run! Run away! It's a trap!
Priest:
Finished your prayers? Then you should have no regrets about dying...
Darksol:
It's been a while, Max.
Max:
Who are you?! How do you know my name...?
Darksol:
You obviously don't remember, but I know you very well indeed.
My name is Darksol. I am the leader of the army of Runefaust.
Max:
What happened to the priest who was in this church? You didn't...
Darksol:
Ah, yes... He knows more about the Legacy than even the king of Guardiana.
Hearing this, I paid him a visit, but he was most uncooperative. I had no choice but to kill him. He was quite a skilled magician, and put up a terrible struggle. Why, I was seriously wounded! I would have liked to finish you off myself, but...ah well.
Ghouls!
Darksol:
I've brought you your dinner!
BATTLE 9
END OF BATTLE 9
Balbaroy:
Thanks for saving us! I'm eternally grateful.
Amon:
Thank you ever so much.
Max:
That's ok... but why are you here?
Balbaroy:
We Birdmen are powerful warriors, who can sour through the skies.
Because of this, we were seen as threats, and attacked by Runefaust...
Amon:
Our race was almost annihilated.
The survivors were forced to flee, leaving their country behind...
Balbaroy:
My wife and I have been travelling in search of our lost brethren.
We were staying here, taking a break from our travels, when Darksol appeared.
Amon:
We fought as hard as we could, but we were no match for him...
The priest who took us in was unable to protect us...
Balbaroy:
We have a favour to ask of you.
If you are truly fighting against Runefaust, then we would be honoured to join you!
Our powers of flight are at your service.
(Balbaroy & Amon join the Shining Force!)
Max:
Thanks! We'll take on Runefaust together!
Balbaroy:
Ahewad lie the forests of Bustoke.
Beyond that is the Pao Plain, further on, the eastern continent.
Amon:
Please allow us to guide you along the path to Bustoke.
Balbaroy:
Let us know when you're ready to depart. We'll wait at HQ.
Amon:
Ah...one last request... When you put us on the field, try to keep us together...
Max:
...
Amon:
Ah... nothing.
Here, this is a token of my gratitude. I'm afraid it's all I have right now.
...I'm sorry.
(Max got Amon's Card!)
And so Max and the other members of the Shining Force set forth from Shade Abbey.
Led by Balbaroy and Amon, the party arrived in the mountainous region of Bustoke.
Beyond Bustoke, across the plains of Pao, lay the eastern continent.
Prompt, where the children of the gods lived. And the sacred land of Metapha...
Searching for the secret of the Legacy, the Shining Force continued their quest.
CHAPTER 2
SPIRIT OF THE HOLY SPRING - EPILOGUE
Zuika:
...
Zuika:
...It's OK. Come quick.
Narsha:
by the looks of it not even Runefaust's troops know about this secret passageway.
Zuika:
Nope
Narsha:
Quickly, to the port!
The old Guardiana army has regrouped on the western continent, with new troops.
Rumour has it they're fighitng against Runefaust. We must join up with them...
BATTLE 10
Narsha:
...So Runefaust's grip extends even to this place...
Zuika:
It looks like they're a little cleverer than we first thought.
Narsha:
...What shall we do?
Zuika:
Simple. The way back is already cut off. Nothing left to do but fight!
AFTER BATTLE 10
If Narsha is defeated in battle -
Narsha:
Aaaaaah...
No... not now...
Not yet...
I can't be beaten yet...
...
Mawlock:
Narsha! You have a mission to carry out! You cannot be beaten yet!
Narsha:
I'm sorry. I couldn't even defend myself. I'm nothing but a burden...
Mawlock:
...
Well, it can't be helped. You must train harder.
Narsha:
Yes, I know.
Zuika:
...But still...
This ship looks OK, but it's too dangerous to sail now.
Since they ambushed us at the port, they're sure to do the same when we're at sea.
We're outnumbered. We're not prepared for a sea battle.
Narsha:
You're right...
...which means we'll have to find a land route instead.
Mawlock:
...There is no time to waste.
If battle is won -
Narsha:
We've defeated the enemies, but...
Zuika:
This ship looks OK, but it's too dangerous to sail now.
They ambushed us at the port, and I'm sure they'll do the same when we're at sea.
We're badly outnumbered. We'd be at a disadvantage in a sea battle.
Narsha:
You're right...
...which means we'll just have to look for another way out.
(Mawlock appears)
Narsha:
...Mawlock!
Mawlock:
...Well! This is a surprise!
I thought you'd already be well on your way to the west by now.
(cont. for both)
Mawlock:
The Shining Force is already valiantly engaged in battle with the army of Runefaust.
Narsha:
The Shining Force?
Mawlock:
A group fighting against Runefaust, led by a young warrior named Max.
Narsha:
...But... the journey across the sea is too dangerous!
Mawlock:
Hmmm... You do have a point there...
Ah, I have it!
I know a better way. I'll show you.
Narsha:
Where are we going?
Mawlock:
You shall see.
Going this way will save us some time ...though it may be a bit risky.
Narsha:
...
(at Ramladu's castle)
Balbazak:
Dragon Master Balbazak reporting for duty, sire!
I was getting tired of just sitting and waiting to attack!
It feels soo good to be called upon at last!
Ramladu:
Yes, I expected as much. Darksol, explain our situation.
Darksol:
Yes, Your Highness. Balbazak! You will be heading to Bustoke.
There, our amy is currently excavating a mech soldier buried in ancient times.
First, collect the soldier.
Balbazak:
Yes, my Lord!
Darksol:
Afterwards, you will return to Uranbatol, east of the Pao Plain.
Our army is now constructing a fortress in Uranbatol. You may strengthen its defences.
Then, when the stragglers from Guardiana arrive... crush them like insects!
Kane:
Lord Darksol! It was I who allowed them to escape. Please let me be the one to...
Darksol:
Patience, Kane. You have a more important task. You will go to Dragonia.
Kane:
Dragonia?
Darksol:
Yes. The land of the dragon gods holds the key to the Legacy of the Gods.
Kane!
Go to Dragonia!
